Is there a magic pill for changing your life?

“I need a magic pill,” a woman told me on a recent discovery call. I asked her what the pill would be for. “My life is a mess,” she said. “Nothing is going the way I want. I know I need to change my mindset. I need that magic pill.” Unfortunately, I had some disappointing news for her. I don’t have one. Many people who look into solution-focused hypnotherapy for feeling stuck in Edinburgh hope for something similar: one session or one technique that changes everything overnight.

She had already done it once

She wasn’t giving up. “A few years ago, I had a dream,” she told me. “I visualised it. I wanted it so badly. It came true. I know I can do it again.”

Now that was interesting. If she had already achieved something she wanted, why did she think she needed a magic pill to do it again? Her own history held part of the answer. Somewhere between the dream and the result, she did a great many things to make it happen.

Why we love the idea of manifesting

Manifesting is an appealing idea. The message usually runs along these lines: picture success, believe it is already yours, feel it and attract it.

I’m all for having a vision. I have plenty of my own. However, psychology tells us something important about visualisation, though. Imagining the future you want and preparing yourself to create that future are two different psychological processes.

What the research says about visualisation

In a series of studies, psychologists Heather Barry Kappes and Gabriele Oettingen asked people to imagine an idealised version of their future. Compared with fantasies that questioned that ideal future, positive fantasies produced lower energy on physiological and behavioural measures. The authors suggest this drop in energy helps explain why positive fantasies predict poorer achievement. One interpretation is that a vivid fantasy lets you enjoy the goal in advance, which reduces the drive to work for it.

By contrast, another study points in a more useful direction. Before a midterm exam, Lien Pham and Shelley Taylor asked university students to picture either the good grade they wanted or the process of getting it. Students who mentally rehearsed the process studied more and got better grades. In fact, their advantage came through better planning and lower anxiety.

Rehearsing the steps prepares you to act in ways a picture of the finish line rarely does.

Where the change actually happens

You can spend every morning visualising a successful business or a happier relationship. At some point you still need to make the phone call, have the uncomfortable conversation, learn the skill or take the risk. Most of the time, you then need to do it again many times over.

That repetition is where psychology and neuroscience become useful. Learning, reinforcement, habit, and how we respond to challenge shape behavior. The brain strengthens the responses you practice. Changing an established pattern therefore usually means practising a new one until it becomes familiar.

I believe in visualisation. Equally, I also believe in repetition and in taking responsibility for what we do. I absolutely believe that people can change. However, I wouldn’t want anyone to confuse the pleasure of imagining a different life with the work involved in creating one.

Why feeling ready rarely comes first

Many people wait to feel ready before they act. In practice, the order often runs the other way. Confidence tends to grow from evidence. Evidence comes from action, because each step you take shows your nervous system that the step was survivable.

Most of the people I work with already know what they need to do. Their difficulty lies in starting before the doubt has gone. Helping people act before they feel completely ready sits at the heart of my work in solution-focused hypnotherapy for feeling stuck in Edinburgh.

How solution-focused hypnotherapy for feeling stuck in Edinburgh helps

Solution-focused hypnotherapy uses visualisation in the way that research supports. We spend little time on what is wrong. Most of each session focuses on a detailed picture of what you want, followed by the first small steps that show you are moving towards it.

We also look for times you have already made a change, like the woman whose dream came true.

Hypnosis is a state of focused, relaxed attention. In that calmer state, you rehearse the steps themselves, from picking up the phone to walking into the difficult conversation. Rehearsing in a calm state can lower the sense of threat around an action, making it easier to take in real life. Solution-focused work is designed to be brief. Change does not have to take years.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy for feeling stuck: steps to try this week

  1. Picture the process. When you visualise a goal, spend most of the time on the steps. Imagine where you are and what you do first.
  2. Name one small action. Choose a step you could take in the next 48 hours. Make it small enough that you can’t talk yourself out of it.
  3. Look back at what worked. Think of something you once believed was impossible and later achieved. Write down what you actually did to get there.
  4. Act before you feel ready. Take the step while you still feel unsure. Afterward, compare what happened with what you expected.

Questions people often ask

Does visualisation actually work?

It depends on what you visualise. Research suggests that mentally rehearsing the steps towards a goal supports planning and performance. Positive fantasies about the end result have been linked with lower energy and poorer achievement.

Can solution-focused hypnotherapy help when I feel stuck?

For many people, yes. Solution-focused hypnotherapy helps you build a detailed picture of what you want and rehearse the first steps towards it in a calm, focused state. Results vary from person to person. A first consultation helps you judge whether it suits you.

How long does solution-focused hypnotherapy take?

Solution-focused hypnotherapy is designed to be brief. The number of sessions depends on the person and what they want to change. Eteri discusses this with each client at the first consultation.

Perhaps the real magic pill is discovering that you can act before you feel ready. If you have been picturing a different life for a long time, solution-focused hypnotherapy for feeling stuck in Edinburgh can help you start building it.

Have you ever achieved something you once thought was impossible? When you look back, was it the visualisation that changed your life, or what you did afterward?
