Why do I keep researching a decision I already know how to make?

At 11 pm you still have eleven browser tabs open. Three of them compare the same two pieces of software, while another holds a review you have now read four times. In the corner of the screen sits a spreadsheet with a new column headed “other considerations”. Earlier today you bought a £200 conference ticket in under a minute. This decision costs £2,000 and could grow your business. So far it has taken three weeks. Many of the business owners who come to me for solution-focused hypnotherapy for indecision in Edinburgh recognise this evening. They make dozens of decisions a day without trouble. One particular kind of decision keeps stalling.

The search for one more opinion

I have seen people spend weeks comparing software, researching marketing agencies, choosing a business coach or deciding whether to raise their prices. They build spreadsheets, read reviews, ask colleagues, and talk to a friend who made a similar decision last year. After all that, they are still looking for one more opinion.
Each new piece of information feels like progress, because it brings a sense of moving closer to the right choice. For a while, the uncertainty becomes easier to tolerate.
But at some point, another opinion adds very little. By then you understand the options and what each one would cost you. At that stage, you’re looking for a guarantee that you won’t regret your choice. Nobody can give you that.

What is happening underneath: uncertainty feels like a threat

The brain treats uncertainty as something to resolve. In a 2016 study published in Nature Communications, volunteers played a game in which they might receive a mild electric shock. Their reported stress rose and fell with how uncertain they were about the outcome. Physical measures such as pupil size followed the same pattern. Uncertainty is uncomfortable in its own right, separate from the outcome you fear.
A £200 purchase carries very little uncertainty about how you will feel afterward. A £2,000 decision about your business puts your reputation at stake as well as your money. Other people’s judgment enters the picture too. The possibility of regret grows.
Gathering information eases some of that discomfort. Research by Bastardi and Shafir found that people often pursue information that would make no difference to their choice if they already had it. Once they start looking, they tend to use it anyway, which can lead them to choices they otherwise wouldn’t have made. Research can therefore turn from a decision tool into a way of managing discomfort.

How postponing becomes a habit

Each time you put the decision off for another week, the tension drops a little. That relief acts as a reward. Psychologists call this negative reinforcement: a behavior becomes more likely when it ends something unpleasant. If you have read my article on avoidance, you will recognise this loop.
The more often postponing brings relief, the easier it becomes to repeat. Eventually, even fairly straightforward business decisions take far more time and energy than they deserve.
Meanwhile, the cost of waiting keeps accumulating. The software you haven’t chosen is not saving you any time. The prices you haven’t raised still sit below what your work is worth.

Why another opinion will not settle it

Most of the people I work with know when they have enough information. Their thinking reaches an answer long before their body agrees to act. The discomfort sits in the nervous system, which responds to uncertainty, no matter what your spreadsheet says.
At some point, deciding with the information you have becomes more useful than collecting information you no longer need. The skill worth building is tolerating uncertainty for long enough to choose. That skill is the focus of my work in solution-focused hypnotherapy for indecision in Edinburgh.

How solution-focused hypnotherapy for indecision in Edinburgh helps

No therapy can remove uncertainty from a business decision. Solution-focused hypnotherapy aims to make uncertainty easier to sit with, so you can choose while some of it remains.
In sessions, we start with what you want your business to look like once you’ve made the decision. We also look for times you have already decided well under uncertainty, because most business owners have plenty of them. Those decisions show a capacity you already have.
Hypnosis is a state of focused, relaxed attention. In that calmer state, the threat response settles. You can then rehearse the decision itself, from choosing an option to sending the new price list to a client. Rehearsing in a calm state makes deciding feel more familiar. Familiar actions feel less threatening when the real moment arrives.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy for indecision: steps to try this week

  1. Set an end date for the research. Before you start, choose the date when information gathering stops.
  2. Ask whether the next fact could change your mind. Before you read another review, write down what it would need to say to make you choose differently. If you can’t name anything, the research is finished.
  3. Name the relief. When you put the decision off again, notice the drop in tension. Saying “that was relief” to yourself makes the loop visible while it is running.
  4. Build in a review point. Many business decisions can be adjusted later. A trial period or a three-month review lowers the stakes enough to act.

Questions people often ask

Can hypnotherapy help with indecision?

For many people, yes. Solution-focused hypnotherapy helps you tolerate the uncertainty that every real decision involves. Clients rehearse deciding in a calm state until choosing feels more familiar. Results vary from person to person. A first consultation helps you judge whether it suits you.

Why do I overthink big decisions but not small ones?

Larger decisions usually carry more uncertainty about how you will feel afterward, along with greater risk to your money or reputation. Gathering more information can ease that discomfort for a while, even when the information no longer helps you choose.

How do I know when I have enough information?

A useful test is to ask whether the next piece of information could change your decision. If you can’t say what it would need to show, you probably have enough.
