Is this who I am, or just what I have practiced?
The meeting is nearly over when your manager asks whether anyone sees a problem with the plan. You do. You spotted it twenty minutes ago. It sits in the margin of your notebook with two lines under it. Your pulse picks up as the room goes quiet. Then you hear yourself say that it all looks fine. On the walk back to your desk, a familiar explanation arrives: I’m not someone who rocks the boat. Many of the professionals who come to me for solution-focused hypnotherapy for limiting beliefs in Edinburgh know that explanation well. They have repeated it so often that it now feels like a plain fact about who they are.
You can get very good at a life you don’t want
You know how to keep the peace when you disagree. You can talk yourself out of an opportunity in minutes. You make everyone else comfortable easily, even when it costs you what you want. You can also make your own expertise sound smaller than it is.
You have done these things so many times that they barely feel like decisions anymore. Then one day you start describing yourself. “I’m not very confident.” “I’ve always been an overthinker.” “I don’t take risks.” “I’m hopeless at selling myself.”
Repeated behavior turns into an identity with remarkable ease.
What is happening underneath: the brain learns what you practise
When you repeat a response in the same situation, the brain gradually changes how it controls that response. Early on, staying silent in a meeting involves deliberately weighing options. With many repetitions, control shifts toward habit systems, including basal ganglia circuits that link a familiar cue to a familiar response. Research on the psychology of habit shows that once these links form, the situation itself can trigger the response with little conscious deliberation.
This efficiency frees your attention for other things. It also means a response can feel natural long after it no longer serves you.
There is a second step. People often work out what they are like by watching what they do, particularly when their inner signals are mixed. Psychologists call this self-perception theory, first described by Daryl Bem. If you notice yourself staying quiet in meeting after meeting, you may conclude, I must be a quiet person.
In this sequence, the behavior comes first. The label arrives later, summarising what you have done. Once in place, it starts to guide the next choice, producing more evidence of the same.
Why familiarity is a poor way to decide who you are
Familiarity is a record of frequency. A response you have repeated for twenty years feels like you because you have rehearsed it for twenty years.
Two decades of avoiding difficult conversations does not commit you to avoiding the next one. Years of hiding your expertise can still lead to you becoming known for what you do.
Your past behavior is evidence of what you have practiced. As evidence of what you are capable of, it is incomplete. You have plenty of data on who you have been. Most of the data on who you could become has not been collected yet.
Why insight alone rarely changes the label
Most of the people I work with can already see this pattern. Yet in the meeting itself, the old response still runs.
Habit responses are triggered by the situation, often before reflective thinking has a chance to speak. Studies of stress and learning show that stress tends to shift behavior toward habit and away from deliberate, goal-directed choices. The moments when you most want to act differently are also the moments when the old pattern pulls strongest.
A new response needs more than a good argument. It needs practice in lower-threat conditions. This is why my work in solution-focused hypnotherapy for limiting beliefs in Edinburgh centers on rehearsal rather than analysis.
How solution-focused hypnotherapy for limiting beliefs in Edinburgh helps
Solution-focused hypnotherapy starts from a different place than most conversations about confidence. We spend little time on the reasons you hold back. Most of each session goes into a detailed picture of how you want to respond. We also look for exceptions, the occasions when you already spoke up or said yes. Those exceptions matter because they are evidence the label leaves out.
Hypnosis is a state of focused, relaxed attention. In that calmer state, you can rehearse the new response in detail, from the sentence you say in the meeting to the moment you accept the invitation. Imagined actions engage many of the same brain networks used to plan and carry out real ones. Rehearsal in a calm state makes the new behavior familiar, making it easier to choose when the real moment comes.
Over several sessions, clients often notice that the old label loosens. They begin to describe themselves differently, because they have new behavior to describe.

What you can try this weekend
- Catch the label. When you hear yourself say “I’m not someone who…”, write the sentence down. Next to it, write the behavior it summarises.
- Look for exceptions. Find one occasion when you acted against the label, however small.
- Run one small experiment. Pick a low-stakes moment this weekend to respond differently. You might share an opinion over dinner. You could also say yes to a plan you would usually decline.
- Record the evidence. Afterward, write down what happened. Each entry adds to the record of who you could become.
Questions people often ask
Can hypnotherapy help with limiting beliefs?
For many people, yes. Solution-focused hypnotherapy works on the behavior behind the belief. Clients rehearse new responses in a calm, focused state until those responses feel familiar. Results vary from person to person. A first consultation helps you judge whether it suits you.
Can you change a habit you have had for decades?
Yes. The brain keeps its capacity to learn throughout adult life. Older habits may take more repetition to shift because the cue and response have been linked many times.
Is low confidence a personality trait?
Personality traits are fairly stable, though research shows they can continue to change throughout adulthood. Confidence in specific situations, such as speaking up at work, depends heavily on practice and experience.
